The glass ceiling is a term meant to describe the inequalities women
are faced with in the professional world, particularly the business community.
Dr. Tae Yun Kim believes that every woman has the opportunity to help shatter
the glass ceiling and become successful.
Dr. Tae Yun Kim has often struggled during her life to overcome the
barriers of antiquated cultural ideas and unequal practices in the business
world. She has firsthand knowledge of the fear and intimidation that are often
used to suppress women and prevent them from reaching an equal playing field
with men. As a native South Korean, Dr. Tae Yun Kim saw how the notion of
“proper” behavior helped to keep women from obtaining any sort of upward
mobility. Her desire to pursue the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do as a child
is just one example of how cultural misperceptions can create inequalities and
injustice for women.
Dr. Tae Yun Kim came from a culture that didn’t allow women to receive
any sort of martial arts training. This oppressive atmosphere, however, only
proved to strengthen Dr. Tae Yun Kim’s resolve, and today she can proudly and
truthfully claim her spot as the first female Great Grand Master of Tae Kwon
Do.
